The idea of a Community Garden in Chidlow originated from 2 young people in about 2015. Their families encouraged and supported the vision of a shared community open space where locals could meet, learn and garden together.
The Chidlow Community Garden is a sub-committee of the Chidlow Progress Association. The garden is being developed on a 35m x 18m area of land which is part of the old railway reserve south of the intersection of Rosedale Road and Thomas St. This land was leased from the Mundaring Shire on a 5-year renewable lease, signed in 2018.
Currently at December 2019, the garden fencing is partially constructed, and there is a gravel pad completed, ready for two railway wagons to sit on, one for a tool shed and one for shelter in difficult weather, and a rainwater tank. The site is close to where the old railway station was, and the planned use of the wagons as buildings acknowledges the railway heritage of Chidlow.
Fundraising for the project has been via plant, produce and flower stalls at the Chidlow Markets, a folk dance amongst other things, and sale of raffle tickets. The support of local people and businesses and of the Shire of Mundaring has been much appreciated. Grants have also been obtained and further grants will be sought to cover establishment costs. Donations of tools and fencing materials etc. have been made, also raised garden beds from Bunnings, who have been helpful. Busy bee work by the group is also appreciated. Further fundraising is needed to meet the costs of water connection, which is expensive. Progress is made as funds allow, which all takes time and effort.
The group gladly welcomes anyone who wishes to become involved.
